Thornwood was proud to project manage this exciting conversion of a dilapidated, and derelict former Army NAAFI building and transform it into a state-of-the-art private school. 

The project's main focus was to preserve and enhance the building's period features and character whilst making it a fit and purposeful place for specialist learning to take place. 

Extensive work to the buildings' fabrics was undertaken to create new spaces for collaboration, teaching and relaxing. 

Key packages of works included: 

- Extensive Asbestos identification & Removal works to ACMs throughout the building given its age.  

- Structural steel envelope to larger sections of the school to form new learning spaces and the central assembly hall. This frame then houses several types of roofing methods followed by Air source heat pumps, Air handling units, condensers and much more. 

- Full dry lining, ceiling and plastering works to add classroom space within the larger existing rooms. 

- Fire treatment to the retained timber section of the building including the walls, floor and roof joists. 

- Complete overhaul of M&E including new substations, risers and plant rooms. 

- 2no state of the art school science labs were created using bespoke joinery cabinetry in clever layouts to maximise the practical learning potential of the room whilst also giving a professional and fresh feel to the spaces. 

- VESDA (Very early fire detection alarm) system installed throughout to periodically test the air throughout the school's vast void spaces. 

- New secondary glazing installed throughout behind the retained, repairs and repainted original timber sash windows allowing the project to pass UValue expectations as well as maintaining the period look and feel of the building. 

- Landscaping & road works to make the areas around the school safe for staff, visitors and children. New playground surfacing and line marking for parked cars were the finishing touches on this beautiful transformation.

This charming building coupled with the superb design and master craftsmen workmanship really epitomises the sense of achievement, pride and passion we at Thornwood feel when working on such an amazing project.
